Due to the massive tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, only one pine tree withstood the destruction in the Takata Matsubara area of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture. This tree became known as the "Miracle Pine." Unfortunately, despite extensive preservation efforts, the tree eventually withered and died.
At the end of that same March, a photograph taken by the Yomiuri Shimbun Tokyo headquarters was used as a reference to faithfully create a woodblock print. The result is a work that revives the dignified figure of the lone standing pine tree in the style of ukiyo-e. It is being released in four versions: one large print and three small prints.
